Don’t Reject the Child.

When you face the struggle and challenge of parenthood or perhaps forget your younger self…don’t reject the child

When the demands for attention become incessant shouting,

When the tantrum of the toddler makes you want to run away,

When the tears at the playgroup break your heart and leave you doubting,

When the begging feeds your guilt “please don’t leave me, please just stay”;

Be there with open arms, be gentle and mild,

Don’t reject the child.

When a sleepy child means the school run is late and the Sports Day is long,

When the homework is forgotten and the grades you despair,

When the shoes go missing and the PE kit goes where it doesn’t belong,

When the teacher’s report says the work needs much more care;

Be patient and calm, never get riled,

Don’t reject the child.

When exams are all done and it’s too late to revise, the results you ignore,

When the dream of going to a particular uni may slip slowly away,

When the world is their oyster they want to enjoy and explore,

When they want to break free and demand their independence but you want them to stay;

Let them roam as they wish in the wild,

Don’t reject the child.

When they make their mistakes even though you warned them and said “don’t”,

When you tell them you’ve been there, you’ve lived long enough to know how it feels,

When your experience of life knows more than they do, yet listen they won’t,

When your years have reduced your adventuring spirit and the comfort of home now appeals;

They will learn through errors and trial,

Don’t reject the child.

When they show you that life has no limit it is only you who decide where it goes,

When they tell you to join them and cast off the restraints you have worn,

When they say “no, don’t stop” as their speed keeps on going but yours slows,

When they tell you to marvel at the darkness of night and welcome the dawn;

You’ll remember when you were once beguiled,

Don’t reject the child.
